Google Chrome Extensions installation by Intune

In this article, I will explain Google Chrome Extensions installation by Intune. As we know, chrome extensions are effortless to install and require no technical knowledge. In a corporate environment, we need to keep the application, and extension installation controlled by IT because of data security, hence we can’t all everyone to install extensions. Intune has the functionality where we can control which extension we need to forcefully install or make available to install for users.

Extensions generally get installed from the Web Store in the Chrome browser. Each extension has a unique code which we are going to use for the configuration in Intune.

Configuration creation

Configuration is simple as we have done a couple of configurations in previous articles. You can club this configuration with the existing configuration or create a separate configuration.

Follow the below-mentioned step to configure the profile for Installing Google Chrome Extensions with Intune.

  • Log in to the Microsoft Intune Admin Center
  • Go to Devices and select Windows
  • We need to Configuration Profiles, so click on Create New Policy
  • Select the Platform as Windows 10 and later and the Profile type is Settings catalog
  • Choose the name and description as per your organization’s start nomenclature.
  • Now click on Add Settings to add the setting from the side-penal
  • Search here for “apps and extensions”, it will list down the setting option, and from there select “Google Chrome Extensions” under the Browse by category.

  • Select both of below mentioned setting
  • Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions
  • Extension/App IDs and update URLs to be silently installed (Device)
  • Now you need to add extension details, for this, you have to go to the Chrome web store –  https://chromewebstore.google.com/
  • Here you need to search for your required extension, we will search Grammarly extension here.
  • Once you find the Grammarly extension on the website, you need to copy the application id of the extension.
  • Paste the extension id to the configuration setting.
  • Here you will find one more option for forceful installation, if you wish to do forceful installation then you can enable it. This will save a lot of time for users to find the right extension from the web store.
  • Select the proper scope tag or leave it for default.
  • Assignment should be a particular group or all Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices
  • Review the settings and create.

End User Experience

We need to verify the extension on the user’s system.

  • Open the Google Chrome browser
  • Click on the 3 dots in the top right corner, go to Extensions and click on Manage Extensions.
  • Here you can see your extensions have been installed successfully
